Taking the ‘power’ responsibility

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

How easy it is to preach than practice. One such example was heard only last month in Hyderbad, also called Cyberabad. Representatives from the IT industry had urged the government to reduce the duration of power cuts as they could not run generators for five to six hours. Then there were reports that said that the local government had barred the VIP zones from the power cuts while the private regions continued to suffer. Unfair, isn’t it?

Unlike Hyderabad, in Madhya Pradesh and particularly in Indore, we have been reading reports of all the government offices being instructed by the State not to use air conditioners. Most Indians would view it as ‘divine justice’ as at least once the government offices and VIP zones have suffered the brunt of others’ carelessness.

However, at AnyLinuxWork, we have realized one thing- whoever’s fault it is, consequences have to be borne by all. Hence, we have become all the more vigilant in using electricity wisely. Most employees, instead of choosing to mock at their public sector  counterparts, have decided to practice wise consumption of power at homes, offices that they visit or friends’ houses that they go to.

Many of them have been sharing experiences where they have made it a point to switch off bulbs, fans, coolers etc when not in use. Shares an employee, “Even if I use a changing room of a shopping mall, I ensure that I switch off the light before leaving.”

Wow! That sounds very responsible and pretty much like the IO culture that has been so well-embedded in the hearts and minds of our employees. In the last blog itself, we had shared how wise power consumption is steadily becoming the habit of most of our employees not only at offices but also at homes.

That way, IO members feel that they are able to justly return the sacrifice being made by the public sector employees of the State. We truly respect the State Government’s stand on this. And we wish to say that we are with them in saving precious electricity.

Please do feel free to share your ‘power’ smart ideas with us.

Stretching life, not hours

This was yet another week of stretching at AnyLinuxWork and the flamboyance on the face of the team members is pleasantly visible. That’s the best part about exercising. It gives us a great feeling. Even if we may be still far away from being healthy, exercising already gives us a feeling that are fit- a motivation we all badly need for treading farther on the fitness road.

AnyLinuxWork employees thus are learning to stretch their lives through exercising at work, instead of stretching hours of work. However, our trainers have also tried to keep a good balance between stretching and over-stretching. Last week thus the IO team re-learnt a lesson about over-doing things.

The key to a good stretching sessions, as all of us learnt, is to feel good and not strained. It may sound a bit paradoxical but stretching should not be stretched too far. Just the right note and we could be playing a melodious composition of health.

Coming back to our stretching exercises, IO is delighted to share some more easy-to-do stretching for which our body would really thank us.

Side neck stretch: To stretch the muscles along the side of neck, face forward and look straight ahead.

  • Tilt head toward one side, gently pushing the ear toward the shoulder. Hold for 15 seconds.
  • Lift the head into a normal, upright position. Relax, and repeat three times on each side.

Head turn: To stretch the muscles along the side and back of neck and at the top of the  back, start facing forward.

  • Slowly turn the head and look to one side until the chin is parallel with the shoulder. Be sure to keep the shoulders straight ahead. Hold for three seconds.
  • Repeat the same steps on the other side.
  • Drop the chin gently to the chest before returning to the upright starting position. Repeat all steps five times.

Chin tuck: The chin tuck also loosens stiff neck and shoulder muscles.

  • Start facing straight ahead.
  • Keeping the back straight, pull the chin toward the chest until one feels a stretch along the back of the neck. Hold for 10 to 15 seconds. Relax, return to the starting position and repeat.

Shoulder shrug: The shoulder shrug targets tight neck, shoulder and upper back muscles.

  • Slowly bring the shoulders up toward the ears. Hold for three seconds.
  • Then, roll the shoulders back and down. Relax and repeat five to 10 times.

Back stretch: One can feel this stretch along one’s mid- and lower back muscles.

  • Sit forward in a chair so that there’s a little room between one’s back and the back of the chair.
  • Face forward and cross the right leg over the left.
  • Put the left hand on the right knee, and gently pull toward the left side while slowly turning the head and shoulders to the right. Keep turning until one sees the wall behind one’s right shoulder. Don’t force the turn — go just until one feels a nice stretch in one’s back. Hold for eight to 10 seconds. Relax and repeat on the other side.

Remember these gentle moves should feel good — never painful.  That’s the code. Happy Stretching!

Topping days with desktop exercise

When man was a nomad, he was uncivilized but fit. Today man is an inventor and user of electronic technology, civilized but unfit. He sure has traveled through Stone Age, Iron Age to Electronics Age but the journey has left him flabby.

Like employees of AnyLinuxWork , most professionals and students rely much on their laptops, desktops et al. Most people rightly think that this makes them efficient and faster. However, what they don’t realize is that these gadgets may be weakening down their immunity system by under-utilizing their body for manual/physical tasks.

That is where, AnyLinuxWork employees beg to differ. Every five minutes, they get up and walk around. They stretch and flex parts of their bodies like wrists, shoulders, neck, back, lower back, waist, neck, thighs to extremities like fingers, ankles and toes to prevent chronic aches.

The latest on IO’s fitness palate is the guidance that they get from desktop exercise sessions. These sessions are held every week for all AnyLinuxWork employees who never miss out on a single day.

The first phase of these sessions involve enlightening the employees about the ill effects of sitting for long duration. Now they have learnt about appropriate sitting posture, which they practiced first during the exercise sessions.

The best about Desktop exercises is that they can be done anytime during the day. Two, they are being increasingly encouraged in the current work cultures worldwide. AnyLinuxWork is one of the pioneers in India that have imbibed it among employees. Here are a few extremely easy exercises that we do at AnyLinuxWork.

Office Yoga

Yoga can be fun especially when you know it can help in releasing tension and increasing muscle strength and flexibility. Some Office Yoga tips:

1. Stretching: Stretch with the arms’ shoulder width apart, clasp hands and elbows backward. It can adjust the shoulder muscle imbalance and promote the blood of ministry of the head, neck, and shoulder to circulate.

2. Swing Shoulder: Hold the left leg with right hand; put the left hand behind back. Then swing shoulder from left to right for 3-5 times. It can adjust the shoulder muscle balance.

3. Neck and spinal column: Put the center of gravity on the left or right and take exercise for 20 times. It can adjust the pliability of spinal column and neck; promote the blood circulation.

4. Waist and shoulder: Bend body slowly for 10 times. It can relieve the fatigue of waist and should; promote metabolism.

5. Exercise for pelvis: Put hands on the knee, then put the center of gravity on the left leg or right leg and take exercise for 50 times. It can relieve the fatigue of pelvis.

Is that much of a deal? Not for AnyLinuxWork employees for sure. It is said that the best things come in small packages. Stretching is a little routine that can work wonders and add efficiency to our work as well. Lets do a bit of stretching today.
