Wake up O sleeper!

Friday, May 24th, 2013

Indore. May 24th. I find my fulfillment in things other than work, said Joan Halloway in the TV Show Madmen and Peggy Olson refused to believe it. How much do you find fulfillment in work really determines your happiness, like it or not. That has a fair reason of course. We are social animals wanting to belong somewhere. Work gives us a sense of belongingness. And since it occupies our minds at least eight to 10 hours a day, it does have a bearing on our daily happiness.

Fret not, however. There are some practical ways that can help in making work more fulfilling. Read on.

Do it to enjoy it: It’s possible that your job doesn’t always give you fulfillment. This means you need to understand the difference between your work and your job. Find out whether or not you enjoy your work. If there are things in your work you do like, you have a good enough motivation to enjoy it.

Set a goal: Of course you have got targets to fulfill for the month and the year. But face it, you cannot work better unless you have set your own goals for the day. Use sticky notes on your computer or have a daily task diary. Write down things that you ought to do every day, including personal things. And see how much of that you are able to fulfill. This will keep you motivated.

Set an example: If you set an example before others, this goes a long way in boosting your self-esteem. Nothing motivates you better than others following your example.

Tick mark it: As kidish as it may sound, but you ought to tick mark the tasks for the day on a daily basis. This keeps you going for the next day. Looking at your accomplishments will do your self-esteem a lot of good.

Think positive: Always have a positive attitude. This will particularly be an asset during stressful situations. It’s okay to fail or feel disappointed. But it’s not okay to keep thinking about it.

Don’t let your stress govern you. Find out ways to keep yourself motivated every single day and you will see many of them really working for you. It’s time to wake up.

Same old routine? Ham it up!

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

BOREDOM is a crime. You cannot commit it. Not allowed. However boring your routine may be, you just cannot let it remain a routine. There is ample scope for you to spice it up. Why are we discussing this under this platform? That’s because boredom leads to a psychological complacency in your life that may not be so conducive to your health. Take a moment. Consider this.

Try a different deodorant

This weekend, visit your favourite mall and pick a different fragrance. Fragrance has the power to lift your mood up. You can feel the difference when you smell different from usual. Hey but choose carefully. Take something which is light and beautifully fragrant. Something that you would be proud of, not something that may repel others around you.

Get a gadget-free sleep

Switch off your mobile after 10 pm this week and give yourself a gadget-break. A calm, peaceful sleep can work wonders to your energy levels the next day. Don’t touch your laptop, mobile phone, iPad, video games or any such thing. And feel the difference it makes to your lifestyle.
Pay attention to what you wear

The biggest thing that can actually change your mood in a flash of a second is a compliment showered on you. But how will it happen if you absolutely don’t pay any attention to your clothes. Pick your clothes for the week on advance. Try different colours each day. Experiment a little. Team up formals with semi formals. You will definitely find enough things in your wardrobe to experiment with, only if you are willing. This will make you feel nice about yourself. You will have earned yourself a great self-esteem.

Rewards on weekend

Nothing can motivate you to work more efficiently if you know there’s a reward waiting for you at the end of the week. Decide your own reward. It could be a shopping experience, a marathon movies series you have been wanting to watch for a long time or simply a great meal at a new restaurant. Plan it on every Monday so you spend the rest of the week in anticipation of the reward. This will keep you in great mood and you will feel motivated to work.
Morning exercises workouts

If you spend the day yawning most of the time, pay attention. It’s your body’s way of telling you that you need some energy in your life. If you decide to exercise in the morning, you will realize you feel much more fresh than usual during the day. Only 20 minutes of morning exercise is all you need to keep the energy levels going. Take this step. Come on. You can do it.

Are you burned out?

Friday, May 11th, 2012

To err is human. To burn out is professional. Every professional faces ‘burn-out’ once in a while. a burn-out is a situation in which a person feels completely saturated – emotionally and intellectually and that starts affecting his creativity or performance at work.

While psychologists have termed ‘burn-out’ to be an essentially emotional situation, the consequences are often related to the health of a person. A burn-out affects the physical, emotional and intellectual health of a person and affects his quality of life considerably.

In the IT industry, that is notorious in India for having abnormal working hours and stiff deadlines, there is a considerable number of people who suffer from burn-out. It is obvious that health suffers in the midst of this problem and that is what we are concerned about at the moment.

How do you know if you are burned out?

  • Lack of focus or concentration on work, distracted by some emotional experiences.
  • A drop in performance or quality of work or creative initiatives.
  • Saturation of ideas while working or dearth of innovations while performing.
  • Monotony in the same work that you enjoyed once.
  • Lackadaisical demeanour – mentally and physically.
  • Loss of appetite. Insomnia.

If you find yourself in one of these situations, it’s likely that you are suffering from burn-out and it’s time to deal with it. The reason why you must take is very seriously is that the consequences of burn-out can be as serious as a high blood pressure and depression. While realizing that you are suffering from a burn-out, also understand that it is possible to solve the problem and it is not very late yet. The following are some practical ways to deal with a burn-out:

  • Take a break: Tell your boss that you cannot concentrate at the moment. Take a holiday, even if for a few days. Don’t think about work during that time. If you have emotional issues, take time to sort them out. Make an effort to solve any emotional problem that you may be having with your spouse, partner, friend or family. Give your mind some rest. Indulge in relaxing, reading books or watching movies.
  • Beauty sleep: Another very effective way to deal with a burn-out is to get plenty of sleep over a certain weekend. Don’t hang out with friends on a certain weekend and take time to just sleep and relax. Sleep has a great healing power and it can heal you mentally.
  • All play: Since work is all what you have been doing for a long time, it’s time to play. Play cricket with a bunch of young boys around you or play badminton with kids in your locality. Indulge in physical activities like running, walking or swimming. Nothing recharges your mind better than a physically tiring activity.
  • Newer pastures: Do something that you have never done before. For example, you have seen people play chess but never tried it. Now try chess this year. Learn it. Challenge yourself. Sit with a competitor and engage in it whole-heartedly for many hours. This will give you a high. The new activity can be anything from singing, dancing, trekking, para gliding to playing scramble, watching a 3D movie etc.
  • Old games: Apart from trying something new, it’s advisable that you do something you absolutely love doing but haven’t done in a long time. For example, sketching is your hobby but due to work pressure, you might not have done it lately. Deliberately indulge in sketching one fine weekend, just to check if you are still good at it. After that you will know exactly what to do.

Burn-out is often a neglected or unrecognized problem that we all face once in a while. The key is to watch for it. Understand that human mind gets bored often especially with a routine work. So you have to give it a break and recharge it frequently. If you make this a life-long habit, you can keep burn-out at bay always.

Are you a hard or a fit worker?

Wednesday, April 18th, 2012

THE old school thought of hard work exists in the minds of some very sincere techies who toil through every inch of their energy. If a software company has even a handful of such employees, it can consider itself lucky. While ethically this seems to be the way to work and progress for them, health wise it’s the biggest mistake they may be committing.

At AnyLinuxWork, we encourage people to learn to keep health issues at bay and go up the professional ladder without compromising on the quality of life. We have developed a check-list to see whether or not our employees are really enjoying life and work both at the same time.

Circadian Rhythms: Are you one of those who work ‘blindly’? Have you ever taken time to calculate what your ‘best performance’ time is? Are there any slots during your entire work day that are often unproductive? Take heart. Know that your high-energy period is the first half of the work day, say, 9 am to 1 pm. That’s what the scientists call Circadian rhythms. Don’t waste this precious time on Facebook or checking emails or replying to them. If you are working on a project, start work on it during this best half. And keep the mechanical tasks like replying to emails, calling HR cell, returning phone calls etc for the second half. Remember that you are at your most creative self during this time, so do your best.

Stretching breaks: Ever noticed that 15 minutes before lunch time, you already start to lose focus? Does it happen before every break? How often do you take a break? If it happens several times, check it. Every time you take a break, it takes much effort and energy to get back to the same level of concentration. This affects efficiency. Result is you end up working late in the office or bring work home. This is very taxing for your health and brain in general. Your biggest motivation to avoid too many breaks during the day – you will be able to go home early.

Physically here, mentally there: Deliberately avoid thinking about work while watching TV or while you are having family time. Distract yourself. You deserve to relax and have fun after every day’s work. It is okay to let go sometimes and forget about work. Try to avoid replying to messages of colleagues about any work related issues. Tell them frankly to discuss them over work. You can do it. This will help your mental health. Your brain will get a real change and will work with renewed energy the next day.

Pamper yourself: Nothing rejuvenates your body and senses better than physically pampering. Even if you are a guy, get a head massage or a pedicure once in two weeks. If not anything, take a long shower after you come back from the office. It’s summer, get a cold water shower and watch your body and brain revel in the refreshing change.

Recreation: At least one physical or mental activity (not video games) outdoor or indoor once a week is a must. Do not confine yourself to work-home-work life. Get out. Gather your friends at least once a week for a hard party or picnic. Play chess with your kid or take him to a cricket stadium. Go running every morning or take a brisk walk every evening. Give your body quality time to unwind.

Weekend work: Have you ever taken work on weekends? How did that week look like? Tiring, isn’t it? On a long run, you are inviting some serious health issues if you are consistently carrying your work over on weekends. Understand that your body has a biological clock and it commands the body to rest and relax completely at least once a week. Even The Bible says that God rested on the seventh day after creating work. Respect your body’s inherent need for rest and rejuvenation. Every machine needs refueling.

Get new air: Plan a weeklong holiday at least once in three weeks. But it should not involve sightseeing or partying. This holiday should take you in the arms of nature. Go to a beach resort or simply a rest house outside the city amid greenery. Watch movies or read books, relax, watch, click, eat and give your body the much-needed change. Switch off your cell phone, don’t carry your laptop on these locations. Breathe in the new air and feel the change in your body.

A fit worker is usually a more efficient one. The need has been felt today even by the employers, why shouldn’t you realize it now? If you lose your health in the long run, you also kill your chances of professional progress. Invest in health today. It’s about time.

Exercise and be a smarter engineer!

Monday, April 9th, 2012

BEAUTY with brains may still be an unrealistic combination but exercise and brains are definitely connected. A new research conducted at the University of Hamburg, Germany and published in the Health Psychology comes as a good news for middle aged men and women who haven’t yet bothered about their physical fitness. The study suggests that if they start exercise now, they can still save their brains from becoming totally exhausted in their senior years.

As many as 68 inactive men and women aged between 40 and 56 were divided into two categories: the cycling group and the stretching group. In the meantime, the study also observed 18 non-active people who were to be compared with the studied group.

Before the assignment, a few tests were conducted including heart fitness test, measurement of memory and other thinking skills. The studied group did these physical exercises for two hours weekly for six months.

The hypothesis was that in late adulthood, a region of the brain involved in memory, the hippocampus, shrinks. While the cycling group’s heart fitness was improved by 15%, there were not many changes on this count among the stretching and inactive groups. But when a memory test of learning a list of items was conducted, both the cycling and the stretching groups did better than the inactive group. The increase in this test score was linked with an increase in fitness. Moreover, it turned out that the cycling group also did better in the recognition test of retaining learned material.

Also, there was a surprise finding. Both the groups were given a paper and pencil test in which they had to find and mark certain letters quickly. The stretching group actually improved more in a test of attention than did the cycling group.

Quite a few studies previously have also suggested a clear connection between exercising and brain power. This should particularly interest people in the IT industry as they constantly lose out on the exercising front due to work pressures. Ironically, this lack of physical exercise affects their brain power in the long run as they struggle to get to the top ladder of hierarchy in their company.

Stretching is something that Team ALW has been practicing right in the office premises through Office Yoga. We have pictures of Office Yoga exercises pinned in each of the employee areas so that people may find time during the entire day for some stretching. And now with this study, we are all the more encouraged to motivate our team to continue doing so.

Cycling is also something that we have been contemplating to encourage our team with. It is an exercise that can actually improve our heart’s fitness. Heart is an important health parameter and is related to the overall fitness of a person. What is interesting is that the targeted group was exercising and cycling only for two hours per week. Imagine if an engineer is able to take out only half an hour every day for cycling or exercising. It can have a wonderful impact on his brain power and overall fitness.

ALW decks up to participate in CeBIT Australia 2012

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

AnyLinuxWork is all decked up to participate in the CeBIT Australia 2012 Show due to be held between May 22nd and 24th at Darling Harbour, Sydney. It is an absolute honour to be participating for the second consecutive year. The team is excited all the more this year as this is its second consecutive year which is sure to give it an edge over many other participants.

Like always, Team ALW is focused towards its offerings and is mainly targeting three areas namely –

1. Sourcing of open source development in PHP-MySQL and ROR; PHP with Automation Process;

2. Joint venture/Collaboration with global product Development Company.

3. Strategic partners/investors looking to work with mid-sized tier city based India IT Company.
In the software industry front, Australia has been experimenting. Australia is ranked 31st in the world for the maturity of its software industry. Start-ups are set to be crucial in helping Australia move up the ladder. Also, start-ups need to develop applications that are relevant to local companies and industry.
“This is the reason why ALW sees CeBIT as a wonderful platform to seek fresh partnerships with local IT companies in Australia. At the same time, we already have our foundation set in the country, thanks to the references of our existing Australian clients. We also get an opportunity to showcase what we have especially in the field of open source development in LAMP-PHP,” informs ALW CEO Vivek Singhal.
CeBIT is providing companies like us a chance for comparing notes on current industry trends, networking, and product presentations. A decade long history of CeBIT has proved it to be one of the biggest and most extensive business technology events in the world. And this is what gives us the motivation to register a professionally strong presence at CeBIT Show.

In addition to the three focus areas in CeBIT 2012, AnyLinuxWork would offer its three prestigious web products built on MVC Architecture, keeping Australian market in mind. These products are:
1) A ShopNetwork: This is a shopping network application based on B2B and B2C model built on MVC architecture. A ShopNetwork is basically a network of shops where shop owners can run their stores on their own domain or as a subdomain.

2) Rent A Property: This project has been developed keeping the real estate rental industry in mind. With the trend of more and more people opting for 2nd homes at holiday locations, the property owners can use this portal for renting out their properties online.

3) mFit Fitness Portal: Looking at the increasing fitness awareness coupled with social media features, AnyLinuxWork has created a unique fitness portal mFit. It can be deployed as plug-n-play system with client specific module customization. Fully developed on web 2.0 standards, mFit can be highly customized thanks to the modular coding approach followed in the development.

The AnyLinuxWork Corporate Profile exclusively includes framework-based PHP coding projects that have given us an edge over companies engaged in regular PHP projects. AnyLinuxWork is thus a ‘PHP Company’ that is equipped to deliver complex frame-work based projects smoothly as everyone on board specialises on one technology. Moreover, this year we have added PHP with Automation Process that has brought in more accuracy in terms of regression testing.

One of our biggest strengths has been a professional work flow following complete Project Life Cycle (PLC) including proper pre and post coding documentation using SRS, PPS, ERP diagrams; project management and reporting using project management tools like Base Camp, Mantis, online staging and production servers; quality analysis following unit and regression also automated regression testing as required.

We don’t take project as a one-time activity but a relationship as being in technology business, we understand there is always a requirement to make changes and addition in the application as per the dynamic web environment. We provide dedicated resources to work on the project for such changes as well as maintenance packages for the upkeep of the application on a long term basis.
We are a 100% software exports company since last 6 years, and therefore we understand Western work culture and professional requirements. This includes communication, reporting, sticking to deadlines and agreements terms, and confidentiality.

AnyLinuxWork has over a decade’s experience in off shore website development. We offer solutions for the right maintenance of the site so that the client has a hassle-free online business. We also offer several solutions for enhancing the enterprise operations of our clients.

We are excited to take these strengths at CeBIT Australia 2012 in Sydney. Our developers are looking forward to offering web development and design services that would create a positive difference for sites.

Creating new IT trends

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

One of the much hyped IT trends has been the ‘flexible work-hour-system’. No one cares what you do in the office as long as you complete your work within deadlines. Sounds pretty good in theory. However, in reality this exposes most software professionals to a work schedule which is practically not fixed. A practical implication of this is that most such professionals do not have a certain routine and they often find themselves doing only one thing – work.
The unscheduled lifestyle often takes its toll on health. And no one seems to notice this until much later when most people find themselves taking blood pressure pills. Here’s where AnyLinuxWork stands out. We have been following a fixed work schedule for many months now. And it has proved to be pretty successful so far.
Our objective is to ensure that our team members lead a stress-free life. We want them to have a positive personal life too. At the same time, professionally, it is so important to be able to learn time management in a way that you are able to have time for every priority. Thus, our team members hit work at dot 9 am every day and leave it at 7.30 pm. That way they learn to manage their time well while in the office and get to spend time back home too.
ALW has always believed in having its own ideas and work methodologies. And this system is one such idea that has struck a chord with our developers. People at ALW are more focused towards time now and are learning to manage their priorities well.

Holiday season, weight shoots up!

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

A recent television show on fitness revealed something which should warn us on advance. Well Team ALW is already warned as it gears up to welcome the festive season. However, we thought of sharing what we learnt.

The show claims that an average person is likely to eat an extra 610 calories a day during the holiday season! Whoa, that’s a lot. But if you look at the real implications of it, yes, with the BIG Indian Holiday Season already round the corner, there’s a fair chance. Look at the amount of home-made ghee delicacies that we all devour every day starting Dhan Teras. Not to mention, the extra special meals that we all have of Daal Baati and the likes. The whole question is: can we avoid that? Nope. And so what do we do?

For one, you can start cutting down a bit of the sweets and heavy delicacies in terms of quantity if not variety. Like if you would devour some 10 Shakkar Paraas in a day, make it 3 to 5. Similarly, engage yourself in physical activity while preparing for the holiday season. Help your maids in sweeping and cleaning activities, considering that every household ends up cleaning up everything during Diwali. For example, at ALW, we have a trend of making all our employees engage in serious cleaning of their cubicles, work area etc. That helps them not only to live up to the holiday season , it also helps burn calories.

Another physical exercise that you can engage in is during shopping for the festival. Take stairs instead of elevators. Park a car a little far from the shopping center and walk some distances. This would practically help in burning extra calories that you would be consuming anyway.

Also, since you are eating the delicacies as they are almost during the entire season, try to have light dinners at home. You can enjoy in a party with ice cream, some cold drinks and some salad too, can’t you? We, at ALW, as always are committed towards our goal of fitness and hence we are doing all it takes. What about you? You too definitely don’t want an extra pound around your belly, do you?
