Life of a software engineer begins with an alarm bell announcing just another day. He may or may not exercise, with last night’s shift already heavy on his head. What does he eat for breakfast? Bread and butter or some cereal or may be just coffee.
Then he goes to the place where he spends most of his day and shall spend a major portion of his life- the office. He sits there from anywhere between 8 and 16 hours. Yes, he sits. Then he sits and keeps sitting. If he is a single living away from family, he would be eating a ‘dabbawala’ lunch whose quality differs from day to day. The other options for him can be office canteen or a McDonald’s.
What’s the whole point of this insightful scene from an engineer’s life? Just to make you realize that in the absence of exercise, what a techie eats can make a lot of difference. Not to say that no exercise is okay. In fact, a techie needs it more than anybody, given the work pressure he faces every day. Yet, eating habits shall go a long way to help him avoid many diseases arising out of a sedentary lifestyle.
Techies, do not eat in bulk. Eat in installments. Keep yourself hydrated. We follow a certain work trend at AnyLinuxWork. We serve snacks to our employees twice a day. This means they eat three times during office hours and a total of five times a day. Most ALW team members avoid eating heavy lunches as their snack gets on their tables at around 4 every day. This healthy eating habit is almost a culture at the office now and everyone has learnt to follow the same regimen at home too.
Yet, there quite a few ‘power snacks’ that can keep you healthy and hydrated. And that’s what we felt like sharing. A few of these snacks are served at ALW too and hence you may rest assured that they are tried and tested.
Cucumber: Summer heat saps your energy. You feel thirsty and hungry both at the same time. Cucumber can quench both. Every time you feel like grabbing a Lay’s or an Uncle Chips, consider buying half a kilo cucumber instead. Cucumbers are so easily available around offices in India. You can bring some from home too. Keep a pack of salt and red chili or pepper on your table to make your cucumber snack spicy. How big a deal is that? Come on, you can do it.
Almonds and raisins: These two are rich in vitamins and healthy too without much worry of the calories. Girls, almonds are just great for your skin, you must eat them often. Boys, raisins shall satisfy your sweet tooth. This combination can do wonders for your body, can keep you younger for a long time and nourish your body with the right nutrition. They are also easy to keep on your table in a closed glass bottle.
Chocobar v/s protein bar: Instead of treating yourself with a Cadbury’s Five Star or Kitkat, pick a healthier option. Protein bars now are easily available at any grocery store. Read the ingredients and pick the one that has less carbs and more protein. Protein bars are both sweet and healthy.
Air popped popcorn: The ones available at the multiplexes are often buttered, have loads of salt in them and they are often micro-waved too. They have more calories and are less healthy. Prefer the air-popped popcorn that can be cooked on stove. They are healthier and tastier. ACT II popcorn packets are available in just 10 bucks at any grocery store. Fill your kitchen shelf with loads of them, and carry them with you at the office especially during a night shift.
Water not coke: Constantly sipping a coke is definitely not very healthy. Always keep a water bottle with you at your desk. Sip it every half an hour to keep your body perfectly hydrated during summer. After nutrition, this is what your body needs. Also, while eating, taking a coke instead of water also has serious health consequences as the former can never replace the replenishment that the water provides.
These are just a few of our favourite snacks that we have at ALW premises. Take our word, they help us get fitter and healthier.

One of the much hyped IT trends has been the ‘flexible work-hour-system’. No one cares what you do in the office as long as you complete your work within deadlines. Sounds pretty good in theory. However, in reality this exposes most software professionals to a work schedule which is practically not fixed. A practical implication of this is that most such professionals do not have a certain routine and they often find themselves doing only one thing – work.
The unscheduled lifestyle often takes its toll on health. And no one seems to notice this until much later when most people find themselves taking blood pressure pills. Here’s where AnyLinuxWork stands out. We have been following a fixed work schedule for many months now. And it has proved to be pretty successful so far.
Our objective is to ensure that our team members lead a stress-free life. We want them to have a positive personal life too. At the same time, professionally, it is so important to be able to learn time management in a way that you are able to have time for every priority. Thus, our team members hit work at dot 9 am every day and leave it at 7.30 pm. That way they learn to manage their time well while in the office and get to spend time back home too.
ALW has always believed in having its own ideas and work methodologies. And this system is one such idea that has struck a chord with our developers. People at ALW are more focused towards time now and are learning to manage their priorities well.

Just when at ALW we were wondering how our old jolly jogs would be compromised during monsoon, and idea struck us! Why not enlist things to stay fit without really going out.
In India and especially in Indore, the roads during monsoon get uglier. Nobody feels like coming out of the house. And going to the gym on these roads comes all the more with much difficulty. Many of our team members usually go for a walk or a jog. They also need an alternative.
Well most of our alternative ways aren’t that special. They are regular but smart ideas to just stay fit and healthy during monsoon too. Take a look:
Indulge in cleaning: Obvious, ain’t it? Weekends can be the perfect time to indulge in some cleaning. It has twofold advantages: one, it will give you some chance to get a natural kinda exercise right at home. Two, the exercise would do the trick for the filthy floors during monsoon.
Climb: If not trees, at least stairs. Set a target of either minutes or number of rounds on the staircase inside the house. How else can you better tone your body than this?
At-home gymming: It is okay if you cannot go to the gym at the moment. Even the simplest of stretches , sit-ups, waist and knee bends etc can give you the best of exercises. If you have dumb bells or treadmill, nothing like it. Time to use them or buy them. Do not take it lightly, even if you do it for like 20 minutes a day. That is enough to give your muscles a real good break.
Just dance: Watch contestants shake a leg in ‘Just Dance’ or any other reality show on television. Follow their footsteps. Dance your heart out. Get a few friends or family members to accompany you. This is a great way to burn calories and have fun at the same time.
Well does that sound easy? It’s really no big deal, if you are willing and really committed to stay fit. That’s what we have been doing at ALW too.

How have ya been? Well we have been fit. We have been trying quite a few newest fitness trends of 2011. These are the things that most health articles are talking about, most fitness blogs are discussing and most fitness trainers are recommending.
Though these trends started out from the West, in no time did they become a big thing in India. And anything happening at the fitness scene has to be happening at ALW too. So here are a few fitness trends of 2011 you don’t wanna miss.
Kettlebells: A lot of fitness websites (shine.yahoo.com, becomegorgeous.com) are full with recommendations with the newest trend on fitness equipments scene. They are called kettlebells and are especially gaining popularity among women. These weights, better known as “cannonballs with handles”, can be used in place of dumbbells. Kettlebell exercises help in working your core and challenge your muscles. They are great for stamina and suppleness.
Pilates and boxing: If you love pilates, combine it with boxing now. Sounds crazy? Well yes but effective nonetheless. However, women should gear themselves up for this one. It tones all-body muscles toning program while the soft and relaxed moves of Pilates are combined with strength training that aims to tone our central part and provide us with more elasticity and a pristine and elegant stance.
The reason why this works so well is that air punches and tummy-strengthening and toning exercises serve as the best means to polish your figure. You can also add weighted gloves to further increase the intensity of the workout. Kicks and leg swings are an integral part too. Piloxing is a great trend this year that bestows women with feminine curves and muscles toned to perfection.
Zumba dance moves: India today is full of private dance training classes that offer not only the basic Western dance but also latin ones like Zumba. More nad more women in India now are trying out Zumba moves probably inspired by reality dance shows like Dance India Dance or Jhalak Dikhla Jaa. Whatever is the reason, Zumba burns tons of calories.
Bootcamp: Believe it or not but this is also a trend in India already. Bootcamps provide the much-needed kicks in the booty to lose weight, build strength, and tone up real quickly. The reason why they are so loved is that they actually utilize circuit and interval training, which are most important for weight loss. It’s like one minute you will be doing as many pushups as you can, and the next you’ll be sprinting. As a result, you don’t get bored plus it literally keeps you on your toes.
Aerojumps: Call it weird or the last thing on your mind but they have come on the fitness scene in a big way. What started with celebrities in Hollywood by a famous fitness trainer became a worldwide phenomenon. This includes rope jumping, workout songs to boost your mood and energy on the spot. Boxers are familiarized with the important of jump ropes in their training sessions.
So what do you think of all these trends? Aren’t they fresh and new? Some of us at ALW are going to try them out. You do too.

It’s half a year already. And a lot of us are probably doing the same old mistakes of the past year in fitness. AnyLinuxWork girls were just caught discussing the faux pas of fitness trends this year. We sneak-peaked and stole a few ideas that they were discussing. Well ofcourse these ideas are not original and picked up from several fitness blogs that they all keep reading. Yet, we definitely stumbled over, if not diamond , a gold mine.
So here’s a lowdown on what is out of the fitness scene and should be avoided.
1) I am fat, I am ugly: This is a thought you better get rid of now. Recent trends have shown that it is important to be fit, healthy and feel beautiful, however your figure is. A great self-image contributes a great deal in fitness and you are able to view yourself as someone who is a flower plant that needs a little bit of pruning. A lot of fit and good-looking men have often fallen for women much heavier in weight. Yet they make a great couple and complete each other.
2) Gym is a necessity: This idea is totally out of the block now. Joining a gym today is a trend not a necessity. Many celebrity fitness coaches would tell you that the basics are the best like swimming, running and walking. Gym is a great option but not an essential for sure.
3) Yoga is a must: Any physiotherapist today would tell you that not every Yoga move is made for you. A lot of Yoga is good for you but you don’t need all of it. Always consult a physiotherapist before you take up Asanas. Understand your body needs and then go for it.
4) Overdoing it: Women suffer from the temptation and its effects much more than men. A beauty expert was desperate to lose extra fat and over-did a few gym workouts. She ended up developing complications in her muscles and had to stop the gym regime for one whole month, that finally led to more fat. So relax, and take it easy.
It’s good to know about fitness trends but it is always better to take them with a pinch of salt. Having said that we also promise to keep you updated soon with some real good fitness trends too. And yes these are all picked up by the girls at ALW. Watch this space!

Hello from the HR desk. Hope you missed us. This month we are so excited to share with you an interesting research conducted by the Stanford University on management practices. We definitely have a reason to brag now. But before that, lets find out what it was.
The said research has measured an increased productivity rate in a company if it adopted good management practices. The research found out that the core set of practices increases the profit and productivity in an organization. During the study, the researchers compared textile industries which adopted few ‘best’ practices to those which didn’t adopt the same. There was an improvement in productivity by 10 percent within a few months of adoption.
And what were these practices? Yeap, almost the same as we do at AnyLinuxWork. Things like incentives based on the performance, clear job assignments and preventive maintenance were also encouraged in an organization. The research even suggested little things like observing, recording and meeting. Ofcourse there can never be a comparison between a textile company and a software company, yet, the principles of good management are quite cosmopolitan and pretty much the same. The practices adopted by the ALW management are well thought-out and properly implemented.
First of all, our team really understands and truly values time. We have encouraged them to smartly work their way up to their targets instead of sitting for late hours or taking work at home. We follow the five-day work module so that everyone gets to have a good time with family and friends. And so an average ALW employee is excited to come back to work on Mondays and that too with a fresh mind and loads of energy.
Secondly, we believe in encouraging our team members to improve quality of their life. We conduct personal grooming sessions from time to time, invite their family members to attend office functions and parties and encourage them towards cultural or creative activities.
Thirdly, our monthly ‘Meri Fitness’ adventures evoke the sports side of our team. We go for trekking, picnics, swing resorts etc so as to make our team keep fit and healthy. In addition, there are desk top exercises being practiced right at the work place apart from educating them on Yoga Asans and other health tips.
And the latest in the list is our Hi5 initiative that deliberately and consciously ensures that our employees are stress-free and they enjoy their work. The Hi5 team keeps organizing fun events at work place to create a friendly and warm environment.
Only last year, we shared with you our several management practices. And now the research seems to only ‘authenticate’ them. Yet, we were the first to know. Yay!

The latest gossip on the IT-insel world has been what? No prizes for guessing. Stress of course. And the recently released Harvard Business Review has made it all the more clear that stress ‘needs’ a handling. It cannot be dismissed as a mere gimmick or fashionable gossip. It needs to be addressed. If the review were to be believed, stress has a direct effect on an employee’s productivity. Ofcourse, the doctors have been telling us since long that it severely affects our health.
So what’s so much to discuss? Well for one ALW has been following quite a few tips that the Review has recently posted. First, the Review cautions against worrying alone. Instead, it suggests, an employee must talk to peers or someone he/she trusts. Share the burden by talking. And that’s what we do at ALW. Our team members and seniors are like a family. We can spill our heart out to anyone around and this keeps us going through a rough day.
The Happy Working or the Hi5 initiative of ALW has been making a positive difference towards creating a stress-free environment. The latest offering is to bring smiles on everyone’s face. The HR cell recently invited childhood pictures of employees to be submitted at the cell and displayed. The most interesting part was guessing as to who was who. The exercise eventually burst into a riot of laughter as team members cracked jokes about childhood. It was almost unbelievable as to how a little thoughtful deed could make everyone’s day.
ALW work culture has yet another characteristic that sets it apart. We believe in logical analysis of things instead of getting too personal with work. What Harvard has suggested now, we have been practicing for ages. This means that one can easily avoid or beat stress if he/she gets the facts right. Often our worries our not logical. They stem from incomplete pieces of information. At ALW, we never believe anything at first sight. We always try to find out the what, where, when, why and how of a situation to avoid stress later, something that the Review also suggested.
Lastly, ALW team is a happy team. Why? Because we accept disappointments the way we celebrate successes. We usually let it go when it is gone. We don’t regret or worry about it. For us, every experience is a learning experience. And so there’s nothing like a failure at ALW.

It all begins with a small idea. Idea that is a culmination of the then unrealistic imagination and that takes off for a shape and size that get bigger with implementation.
One such idea struck us recently and what timing- the New Year’s. It’s the same old spirit of innovating newer work practices but it’s the newest way to practise the practice.
The newest news in the new at the much new spirit-filled AnyLinuxWork is the Happy Working Campaign kicked off with much zeal on January 4th. It is an HR initiative to maintain a stress-free work environment. More importantly, it’s a campaign to make people love their work, workplace and live a stress-free life in general.
In the words of ALW CEO Vivek Singhal, “I want to see my people enjoy work like never before. I want them enjoy it like it’s their life and enjoy it like it’s their love. I want them to enjoy it without stress. That’s our Happy Working Campaign for the year 2011. “
For older teammates, however, this is not very surprising as we have always believed in and have encouraged a culture of healthy work and healthy life. The only difference this year is that we are going to see it get implemented in deeds and activities. We are determined to ensure that our people are happy at work, not just working for the sake of it or under pressure. The entire year will witness programs on the theme focusing and making people really implement a stress-free work life. Doesn’t that sound exciting?
Well it already generated a lot of enthusiasm among the team mates. The first activity started with the writing on the wall. And what did they write? Well, answers to an interesting question. ALW team mates geared up to think of witty replies to ‘Why a cycle can’t stand alone?’ and painted the ALWS wall with their thoughts. The Happy Working Campaign would have more such events and activities during the year. Watch this space to get more updates.

The healthiest things in the world are often the simplest too. And the fittest things in the world usually require the least effort. All you need is a great idea and a bunch of ardent friends. That’s what we did a few weeks ago. The AnyLinuxWork Team got together for some real adventure with the organizing of two action-packed events.
The first was a super fitness challenge christened as Tandurusti Ki Pariksha (meaning test of fitness/health). This was a trekking expedition organized in town for the entire team. Since, trekking stimulates our body, we decided to give it a try. And well it wasn’t just a trial, as it turned out. It was quite an effort.
Thus began another great culture at ALW- the culture of adventure sports. The trekking expedition took off at 9 am sharp from the bottom of the famous Ralamandal hill in town. In scorching heat, not to mention the humidity, members truly got the taste of ‘heated trekking’ that day. To top that, there were many other fitness-challenge activities that didn’t let them rest even for a while. There were tugs of War, Skipping and Yoga positions. Team members enthusiastically participated in the event that left them feeling fitter than before.
The second was a picnic to a place of historical significance in the state called Mandu. But that definitely involved the best of all physical exercises i.e walking. The rains on ALW’s picnic provided the perfect setting and added to the adventure. We took care of the littlest details to ensure the trip went great just when it became perfect.
It was as if the weather was favouring us. It was rainy and foggy that added to the beauty and splendour of Mandu’s palaces. The next day we were all thrilled to read in the newspapers that it was declared by MP tourism as the best day to visit the place. During the trip, the excitement of our team members reached its peak as we played games, won prizes and dug into snacks.
While returning the only thing that we found ourselves discussing was the plan of the next fitness expedition! As always, ALW team showed its undying commitment to stay fit and stay healthy.

Leaders, some say, are born and not made. However, yet another school of thought keeps fighting off this idea and so we have some real good B-Schools across the country. Most good leaders won’t be able to teach you leadership. That’s simply because more than flaunting leadership, they have practiced it.
Leaders at AnyLinuxWork have one thing in common- they are accessible to everyone. You can walk in to them with ideas, thoughts, doubts, complaints and clues anytime. IO leadership believes in encouraging people to discover their individual goals for their lives. This, in turn, widens the landscape of work at IO adding ever newer dimensions to work culture and work quality.
At Office Space today, lets explore some very interesting qualities of the leaders at AnyLinuxWork. And yes many of these, you will realize, are cultivable.
Effervescence: Leaders at AnyLinuxWork are full of life and have a knack for infusing their energy into others. They are people who have the ability to light up the environment around. All they need is a good joke to start a meeting or just entering a board room with a real good ‘Hello everyone!’.
Amour-propre: This is French for ‘self-love’. IO leaders, however, love work ethics and stick to them. They love the brand IO that they have created and developed over the years. This love translates into their efficiency in traveling any distance to making the brand successful.
Integrity: Jack Welch- the man behind initiatives like Six Sigma quality, e-business and former CEO of General Electric- has more than once proved that you cannot lead unless you have integrity. In his autobiography, Welch shares: “I stuck to some pretty basic ideas that worked for me, integrity being the biggest one.”
At AnyLinuxWork, integrity is almost synonymous to leadership. Our employees get inspired to work with integrity because they have seen our leaders do the same. Our leaders have always been people of strong values and honesty. It is thus no surprise that we see the same values being transferred down to the other levels of leadership. .
Organized life: Infosys Founder Narayan Murthy cautions- ‘workoholism’ must not be aped. A few months ago, IO leaders had shared affinity with this idea and had inspired the rest of the team. As a result, most employees have now cultivated a habit of working smart instead of working more. Our leaders lead a life that emphasizes the importance of inter-personal relationships. They are equally committed to their personal lives. Thus they encourage their subordinates in their personal achievements as well. They have successfully created such an environment at our office that each individual focuses on having a good life and not just professional success. In addition, it is our policy to be mindful of the health and personal life of the employees. Joint celebrations, fitness initiatives, recreation facilities etc are some of the most practical things we do at IO to ensure that each one leads a healthy and happy life.
Complimenting: How easy and handy it comes to point out mistakes. A heart of appreciation, ironically, doesn’t come so easy. However, the art of complimenting is something that is an integral part of the IO work culture. Nothing tastes better than a compliment right out of the horse’s mouth. Apart from an organized system of encouragement through ‘Employee of the Month Award’, IO leaders never miss out on showering words of appreciation to team members even in the smallest of achievements.
Self-domain: Most people keep waiting for ‘the big opportunity’ for exercising their leadership skills. This is definitely a mistake. A good leader leads a team of two as energetically as he does a team of 20. What really matters in leadership is not the size but the spirit of leading. Effective leaders love their domain of work and transmit this feeling in others around them.
We have tried to inculcate this habit of leadership in each employee by making him or her accountable for the work assigned. IO leaders give each member enough freedom to logically take decisions on their respective assignments. As a result, each team member never feels insufficient to deliver his or her best.
These are a few more visible qualities of our leaders apart from many personal qualities that they have like a good character, sportsman’s spirit and a generous heart. The good news is IO provides ample opportunities for cultivating these qualities and practice leadership right from where one is placed. If this can happen at IO, it can happen anywhere. There may be a great leader sleeping inside you. It’s time to wake him up.
