Topping days with desktop exercise

When man was a nomad, he was uncivilized but fit. Today man is an inventor and user of electronic technology, civilized but unfit. He sure has traveled through Stone Age, Iron Age to Electronics Age but the journey has left him flabby.

Like employees of AnyLinuxWork , most professionals and students rely much on their laptops, desktops et al. Most people rightly think that this makes them efficient and faster. However, what they don’t realize is that these gadgets may be weakening down their immunity system by under-utilizing their body for manual/physical tasks.

That is where, AnyLinuxWork employees beg to differ. Every five minutes, they get up and walk around. They stretch and flex parts of their bodies like wrists, shoulders, neck, back, lower back, waist, neck, thighs to extremities like fingers, ankles and toes to prevent chronic aches.

The latest on IO’s fitness palate is the guidance that they get from desktop exercise sessions. These sessions are held every week for all AnyLinuxWork employees who never miss out on a single day.

The first phase of these sessions involve enlightening the employees about the ill effects of sitting for long duration. Now they have learnt about appropriate sitting posture, which they practiced first during the exercise sessions.

The best about Desktop exercises is that they can be done anytime during the day. Two, they are being increasingly encouraged in the current work cultures worldwide. AnyLinuxWork is one of the pioneers in India that have imbibed it among employees. Here are a few extremely easy exercises that we do at AnyLinuxWork.

Office Yoga

Yoga can be fun especially when you know it can help in releasing tension and increasing muscle strength and flexibility. Some Office Yoga tips:

1. Stretching: Stretch with the arms’ shoulder width apart, clasp hands and elbows backward. It can adjust the shoulder muscle imbalance and promote the blood of ministry of the head, neck, and shoulder to circulate.

2. Swing Shoulder: Hold the left leg with right hand; put the left hand behind back. Then swing shoulder from left to right for 3-5 times. It can adjust the shoulder muscle balance.

3. Neck and spinal column: Put the center of gravity on the left or right and take exercise for 20 times. It can adjust the pliability of spinal column and neck; promote the blood circulation.

4. Waist and shoulder: Bend body slowly for 10 times. It can relieve the fatigue of waist and should; promote metabolism.

5. Exercise for pelvis: Put hands on the knee, then put the center of gravity on the left leg or right leg and take exercise for 50 times. It can relieve the fatigue of pelvis.

Is that much of a deal? Not for AnyLinuxWork employees for sure. It is said that the best things come in small packages. Stretching is a little routine that can work wonders and add efficiency to our work as well. Lets do a bit of stretching today.

Corporate Social Responsibility: Use Electricity Wisely contd…3

Proud to be ‘power smart’

A very interesting research conducted recently has found its way into our blog space of CSR this time. This study comes as a fitting support to our cause of Using Electricity Wisely. While in the last blog, we shared about how leaders at AnyLinuxWork were setting good examples, this time lets explore how has this cause influenced our employees.

The aforesaid study by Kenexa Research Institute (KRI), a provider of business solutions for human resources, reveals that three out of every five employees in India want to work for socially responsible organizations. It has suggested that an organization’s participation in corporate responsibility and environmentally friendly business practices has a significant influence on employee engagement and business outcomes.

The research has outlined a few key points on the impact of CSR on employees: 1. Employees feel a sense of pride in their organization. 2. Having a CSR adds to their overall satisfaction and possibility of recommending it as a good work place. 3. Employees stay longer in such organizations. 4. CSR plays a key role in attracting employees to an organization.

AnyLinuxWork is proud to share that our employees’ attitude is no less different from the results of the above research. The way they have emulated IO leaders is evident from little things that they practice everyday at the workplace. One of the major reasons why our employees have happily embraced the CSR is because of the IO philosophy of practicing before preaching. Two, IO always takes into account the views of the employees before implementing CSR policies. IO employees share how they have adopted certain habits that contribute into the cause of Using Electricity Wisely. Says an executive – “Using electricity wisely is not just a company obligation to me, it has become my habit. I always turn off the charging switch as soon as the mobile shows full battery.” This is simple yet effective. Many Nokia and Motorola users would have noticed that the phone auto-generates a message when the battery is full.

The habit of using electricity wisely has already traveled to the homes of many of the employees. Another employee shares, “I have started using CFL bulbs at home that save up to 30% of electricity.” Many others testify that they feel extremely delighted to be part of such an initiative and it has added to their ‘pride’ factor in AnyLinuxWork. While Earth Hour is being observed periodically, at AnyLinuxWork using electricity has become a part of life. Please do share your own ‘power smart’ ideas with us.

How we learnt to beat stress!

Is stress the result of professional and emotional pressures alone? Most people would think so. What we ignore so conveniently is that stress has also to do a lot with the nutritional status and fitness levels of a person.

At AnyLinuxWork, we realized long back that external and internal factors are equally responsible for stress. External factors include job environment, challenges, situations and expectations around a person. Internal factors determine our body’s ability to respond to, and deal with, the external stress-inducing factors. Internal factors influencing our ability to handle stress are nutritional status, overall health and fitness levels, emotional well being, and the amount of sleep and rest we get.

And so IO enforces exercise, which is the first step towards stress management. Since the stress response prepares us to fight or flee, our bodies are primed for action. Unfortunately, most people usually handle their stress while sitting at desk, standing at the water cooler, or behind the wheel stuck in traffic.

Thus, we, at AnyLinuxWork, endorse exercise regime that helps to turn down the production of stress hormones and associated neuro-chemicals and avoids the damage to our health which prolonged stress can cause.

Exercising is a vital culture at IO family. AnyLinuxWork also holds yoga classes for employees. Moreover, we have introduced desktop stretching exercises to beat backaches, neck and shoulder ache and to maintain optimum blood circulation in the extremities. To top that, demonstrating new exercises is a regular feature of IO family as part of the daily routine and attended enthusiastically by one and all.

AnyLinuxWork takes utmost care to keep optimum hygienic conditions among our employees. Disposable tissues, liquid hand wash are some of the simple yet effective measures taken to keep widespread physical conditions like swine flu and common cold at bay.

Another preventive measure that we take is getting a six-monthly check-up of all the employees by our in-house physician to curb the onset of communicative and other common diseases.

In this IT era, health is often neglected causing stress, which results in serious heart-related diseases at later stage. At AnyLinuxWork, we have realized this and have learnt to keep our body fit so as to reap good health benefits. That’s why we are well, happy and fit.

Corporate Social Responsibility: Use Electricity Wisely

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Lets be ‘power smart’!

Every company, each CEO, every minister and each individual strives to be powerful. However, nobody is really concerned about the real and tangible ‘power’ that is bestowed to mankind by technological advances and some natural resources. How many of us have ever thought of electricity to be one of the biggest boons of modern lifestyle. A power failure of 10 minutes leaves us perplexed, helpless and jobless.

Talk about how many industries literally depend on electricity for their
moment-to-moment production. IT industry is one such territory that would be arid without electric power. However, there is not much awareness in the IT industry about using this blessing smartly and with responsibility. And that’s what drove ALW to take this issue up as its Corporate Social Responsibility.

ALW team has pledged to use electricity as wisely as possible in order to contribute in prevention of power wastage. We are so much committed to the cause that we have an internal audit system to keep a track of individual consumption of electricity by each team member. This checks any power wastage and makes all of us accountable for the same. Moreover, in future we wish to implement many more mechanisms like a power-saving device etc to serve the cause.

We also intend to set an example and offer a model of using electricity wisely for all the other IT companies who feel so strongly for the same. Through this section, we urge all such companies to join hands with us and offer ideas, feed backs, suggestions, tips or even feelings about how electricity can be used wisely.

Please do feel free to mail us about what you think.

AnyLinuxWork encashes prospects post meltdown

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

The world changes every minute. And it seems nowhere in history was it more apparent than now. Yesterday we see a superpower grinding to a halt and today we see an underdog rising rapidly. American recession is followed by global meltdown and its recovery. US universities are coming to India to recover from losses with predictions getting momentum that India would be the most educated by 2030.

The IT world for that matter has had its fair share of contradictions since beginning. The latest addition to the tradition is by a 22-year old Indian cyber crime expert who claims he has solutions to all kinds of cyber problems.

The picture is good for big and small IT companies is general and ALW in particular. As many companies excitedly expand capacities, ALW, that successfully survived in the Dark Ages, is striving to get its processes right. It is ready to take on the challenges and use every opportunity available. We have re-defined our infrastructure , policies and shaped up more talents in the course of time. A few facts would make it clear. We already have a spare capacity in our infrastructure of 40 seats that can be utilized any time. The Training batch is in place and would be ready within two months time. We have automatized our training, infrastructure etc and scaled up operations.

As for technology, ALW has got its fingers into Majento, Alfresco so that our learning curve would be less now. We have developed products that are now ready to be marketed. The much-awaited fitness portal is ready while its marketing is on cards now. In addition, our software development projects now have a lot of value added services like SEO and SMM. No surprises thus that our team is high on morale particularly in view of the fact that the recession time never could take a toll on the members. Genius is one per cent inspiration and 99 per cent perspiration. Our team truly lives up to it. They are a bunch of self-motivated individuals who take  every project work as a pleasant challenge that would open more scope of learning and growing.
