MANY women, as per a recent research, would prefer to lose their eyesight if that meant becoming slim. Arizona State University recently conducted a research that listed things women would give up only to become slimmer. Other women chose depression over obesity. The research has highlighted some very interesting statistics about health among people.
Drinking cola with pizza is a trend that has caught up on a very large scale in India. No wonder thus that one in 10 parents in Britain thinks cola is actually good for health and that it can actually supplement food and drink. This was revealed in a survey by a food company.
There’s some bad news for smokers too. They lose memory if they continue with the habit. According to a research by Northumbria University, smokers lose at least a third of their everyday memory. This was revealed through tests conducted on smokers and non-smokers, in which the former performed significantly poorly than the latter.
However, what was more shocking was another statistics that stated that while we all may be avoiding sugar quite consciously every day but unknowingly might be consuming 46 teaspoons. That is because even though you may not be eating desserts and other sugar foods, the processed food could be a possible culprit in your sugar intake. That is because many food processing companies have been steadily increasing the sugar content in their ingredients.
Team ALW has a lot of health objectives every year. We discourage people from smoking and eating processed food in abundance. We always prefer healthy home-made food for our employees while also taking positive steps towards their fitness.

Life of a software engineer begins with an alarm bell announcing just another day. He may or may not exercise, with last night’s shift already heavy on his head. What does he eat for breakfast? Bread and butter or some cereal or may be just coffee.
Then he goes to the place where he spends most of his day and shall spend a major portion of his life- the office. He sits there from anywhere between 8 and 16 hours. Yes, he sits. Then he sits and keeps sitting. If he is a single living away from family, he would be eating a ‘dabbawala’ lunch whose quality differs from day to day. The other options for him can be office canteen or a McDonald’s.
What’s the whole point of this insightful scene from an engineer’s life? Just to make you realize that in the absence of exercise, what a techie eats can make a lot of difference. Not to say that no exercise is okay. In fact, a techie needs it more than anybody, given the work pressure he faces every day. Yet, eating habits shall go a long way to help him avoid many diseases arising out of a sedentary lifestyle.
Techies, do not eat in bulk. Eat in installments. Keep yourself hydrated. We follow a certain work trend at AnyLinuxWork. We serve snacks to our employees twice a day. This means they eat three times during office hours and a total of five times a day. Most ALW team members avoid eating heavy lunches as their snack gets on their tables at around 4 every day. This healthy eating habit is almost a culture at the office now and everyone has learnt to follow the same regimen at home too.
Yet, there quite a few ‘power snacks’ that can keep you healthy and hydrated. And that’s what we felt like sharing. A few of these snacks are served at ALW too and hence you may rest assured that they are tried and tested.
Cucumber: Summer heat saps your energy. You feel thirsty and hungry both at the same time. Cucumber can quench both. Every time you feel like grabbing a Lay’s or an Uncle Chips, consider buying half a kilo cucumber instead. Cucumbers are so easily available around offices in India. You can bring some from home too. Keep a pack of salt and red chili or pepper on your table to make your cucumber snack spicy. How big a deal is that? Come on, you can do it.
Almonds and raisins: These two are rich in vitamins and healthy too without much worry of the calories. Girls, almonds are just great for your skin, you must eat them often. Boys, raisins shall satisfy your sweet tooth. This combination can do wonders for your body, can keep you younger for a long time and nourish your body with the right nutrition. They are also easy to keep on your table in a closed glass bottle.
Chocobar v/s protein bar: Instead of treating yourself with a Cadbury’s Five Star or Kitkat, pick a healthier option. Protein bars now are easily available at any grocery store. Read the ingredients and pick the one that has less carbs and more protein. Protein bars are both sweet and healthy.
Air popped popcorn: The ones available at the multiplexes are often buttered, have loads of salt in them and they are often micro-waved too. They have more calories and are less healthy. Prefer the air-popped popcorn that can be cooked on stove. They are healthier and tastier. ACT II popcorn packets are available in just 10 bucks at any grocery store. Fill your kitchen shelf with loads of them, and carry them with you at the office especially during a night shift.
Water not coke: Constantly sipping a coke is definitely not very healthy. Always keep a water bottle with you at your desk. Sip it every half an hour to keep your body perfectly hydrated during summer. After nutrition, this is what your body needs. Also, while eating, taking a coke instead of water also has serious health consequences as the former can never replace the replenishment that the water provides.
These are just a few of our favourite snacks that we have at ALW premises. Take our word, they help us get fitter and healthier.

Jogging on the streets of Mumbai is probably the most non-Gujarati thing Anil Ambani would have ever done. Yet he is pretty particular about it. He was featured in a report published a few months ago in The Economist. The report listed many other ‘jogging bosses’ including CEOs of top-notch software companies of the likes of TCS and Wipro.
Since Indian Software Industry pretty much works as per the norms of the West, it is no less welcoming a trend that CEOs also want to look good in public. They want to stay fit to be more efficient and effective. They are often the ‘face’ of the company and that’s gotta be good.
AnyLinuxWork CEO is no different. He never misses his gym in the morning regardless of a previously fatigued day. He follows a disciplined lifestyle, meets his deadlines, sets examples and has plenty of family time too. In fact, it is his fitness consciousness that led him to get designed a plug-n-play product, a fitness portal called mFit. Well, that for later.
But what exactly works best for the CEOs? Fitness and health experts warn against going in for ‘targeted’ fitness goals such as losing a few kilos in a few weeks or trying to achieve too many things at a time. The reason why jogging works best for them is that it is usually an all-round exercise that has almost no side effects unless you already have a history of joint pains. They get plenty of fresh air in the morning that can be energizing for the rest of the day.
It’s almost ironic that they can afford the best of the gym any given day but most prefer to walk or jog. A very practical reason could be that gyms require a strict regimen to be followed on a daily basis. Since their lifestyles often require extensive travelling, going for a jog comes handy, almost anywhere. In addition, jogging helps de-stress – something that gyms often fail to.
Interestingly, quite a few research reports have been talking about a positive connection of jogging and ageing. It has been proven in most cases that keeping fit by jogging or cycling through middle age and beyond slows and even reverses the decline in muscle power, balance and co-ordination in later life. Google health articles and you might be surprised at finding how many of them recommend jogging as the topmost priority for health and fitness.
Psychologists have also stated that since jogging fights back stress to a great extent, it develops a better ‘self-image’ in people. This may be crucial for a top-notch CEO who is under a constant media glare almost all the time. Jogging increases self-confidence as it helps tone the body and provide it an athletic built.
That explains most clearly why a person in that position would do something as mundane as jogging. As for us back here at Team ALW, a great example has been set. And we have been following it for quite sometime now. What about you?

EVEN as the ‘age miracle’ creams do their usual rounds in the market and attract you through ads, natural ways to stay young continue to rule the fitness roost. The twist? You get to not only look good but also stay healthy. This approach practically goes beyond the oh-my-I-have-wrinkles mentality and helps you to view a more logical side of ageing gracefully.
More than wrinkles, the few things that really tell you are ageing are:
• Muffin Top: That ugly abdominal fat can make you look you are in your late 30s even when you are only 25 years old. The same goes for people older than that. Cut that fat and you will find yourself looking at least five years younger.
• Heart problems: Do you already have a blood pressure or a heart problem while you are still 35? If yes, this is the biggest indicator of your ageing faster than usu
• Gray hair: Grays are often the results of a stressful life. Ever wondered why even the youth aged between 18 and 25 have now started getting gray hair? That’s because a lot of stress has gotten into their lifestyles.
And why exactly are we discussing this? A study conducted in UK recently talked about the effects of exercises like jogging and cycling on the overall looks of people. About 20,000 people were questioned many of whom were found to be doing mundane things like housework or gardening to keep themselves fit.
The survey found them to be ‘younger looking’ and more relaxed about their ageing than those who did not exercise or did any kind of physical activity at all. Muscle power is one thing that is a definite advantage of physical activities like cycling, jogging and trekking.
Many other findings of the report have obvious parallels in India. It is usually found in India that women begin to lose their fitness when they are about 35. The most obvious reason being they are married, have children and feel more settled. At this age, their husbands have better incomes, more comfortable lifestyle. It cuts down on their housework as now they can afford a maid. Men in India, on the other hand, usually attain a more settlement in their professional life. Since they have left college a long time ago, they have somehow also left any charms for physical exercise. However, a disturbing trend in the country is the presence of abdominal fat, blood pressure problems etc among the IT professionals who are barely 26.
What should they do? The three most practical things that one can do are: jogging, cycling and housework. These three exercises have been proven to have delayed ageing by as many as 10 years. The reasons are simple – they help to burn extra fat, increase your muscle power and hence stamina, improve self-image, rejuvenate and energize the body.
Apart from jogging and cycling, even house chores such as sweeping the floor, gardening, cleaning fans, coolers etc are great exercises that would help delay your ageing process.
Team ALW often engages in activities such as jogging and trekking quite regularly. Quite a few of our team member are regular gym goers apart from others are who are very particular about their daily exercises and Yoga. Quite a few of our women testify of doing housework at least twice a week while the team often goes for trekking expeditions on weekends.
The reason why we are sharing it here is simply because if it’s possible in an IT company like us, it’s possible anywhere. Keeping fit can never go out of fashion and anti-ageing creams can never work wonders inside your body. You have to work from the roots. Start today.

Interesting gossip has been doing the rounds at ALW lately. Someone from the team quoted an interesting anecdote of a fellow gym partner who created a scene. Thus began a very interesting spree of exchanging views about how people behave at these places.
Just as we talk about work ethics often that also include the way one behaves at workplace, there are ways that govern one’s attitude at the gymnasium too. Believe it or not, it is DIRECTLY related to your health.
So that’s what we investigated this week. Are there any rules of behavior at the gym too? If yes, what are they? Well for one you know that the gym is pretty much a social place. There are trainers, peers, strangers and all kinds of people. You may or may not know them but you gotta be careful about how you behave. Here’s an interesting list of the gossips that we heard and as usual this is one piece of gossip that you do not want to miss.
Dumbbells manners: Get this straight. You cannot just leave the dumbbells on the floor. That’s bad manners. There’s a dumbbell rack in every gym. Put them back because if you don’t, everyone else would do the same and one day you will hit yourself with one of them.
Treating weights: What’s your first physical expression when you finish your workout with weights. Is it throwing them down? Then watch out. Weights are made up of cast iron, which is brittle. Lets say if someone just takes a 10 or 20 kg weight and throws it on the floor, it can not only damage the weight but also risks people around. The pieces of it could be sharp enough to cause a deep cut.
See, this is how you should do it: Oh how we Indian love to give a piece of advice here and there. The best targets being new comers in every gym who often ‘look’ like they need help. However, that doesn’t give you a license to get ‘nosy’ and start telling them things like chin ups are better then pull ups, the one you are working out won’t work on your triceps. Get real. There are trainers around here. Let them do their jobs. A lot of people at the gym will not appreciate your friendly advice.
Oh let me rest: How tempting when you see an equipment standing all alone doing nothing. You so want to rest upon it. This one can seriously bug someone doing serious training. If the person is resting for a couple of minutes between sets, no problem. If he/she is sitting there chatting for 5-10 min and every now and again pump out a rep or two. Dude, that’s very annoying and quite selfish.
Uuugh the smell: Well what do you expect in a gym? But if you awfully smell enough to make you and the person near you not lift properly, you gotta do something about that. Move a bit side. Wash your gym t-shirt, knickers and socks regularly.
OMG grunting. Yes you are working hard at the gym. Afterall, you are working out. So that’s a good enough reason for everyone to know how much you are toiling. Right? Well actually yes as grunting is pretty normal, it’s for breath control, it’s often recommended so that one can remember when to exhale. BUT, you do not want to invite stares, do you?
The reason why all this gossip today is good for you is because if you are mindful of this, you will make an excellent gym inmate. This will keep your heart healthy and you will stay fit.

How have ya been? Well we have been fit. We have been trying quite a few newest fitness trends of 2011. These are the things that most health articles are talking about, most fitness blogs are discussing and most fitness trainers are recommending.
Though these trends started out from the West, in no time did they become a big thing in India. And anything happening at the fitness scene has to be happening at ALW too. So here are a few fitness trends of 2011 you don’t wanna miss.
Kettlebells: A lot of fitness websites (shine.yahoo.com, becomegorgeous.com) are full with recommendations with the newest trend on fitness equipments scene. They are called kettlebells and are especially gaining popularity among women. These weights, better known as “cannonballs with handles”, can be used in place of dumbbells. Kettlebell exercises help in working your core and challenge your muscles. They are great for stamina and suppleness.
Pilates and boxing: If you love pilates, combine it with boxing now. Sounds crazy? Well yes but effective nonetheless. However, women should gear themselves up for this one. It tones all-body muscles toning program while the soft and relaxed moves of Pilates are combined with strength training that aims to tone our central part and provide us with more elasticity and a pristine and elegant stance.
The reason why this works so well is that air punches and tummy-strengthening and toning exercises serve as the best means to polish your figure. You can also add weighted gloves to further increase the intensity of the workout. Kicks and leg swings are an integral part too. Piloxing is a great trend this year that bestows women with feminine curves and muscles toned to perfection.
Zumba dance moves: India today is full of private dance training classes that offer not only the basic Western dance but also latin ones like Zumba. More nad more women in India now are trying out Zumba moves probably inspired by reality dance shows like Dance India Dance or Jhalak Dikhla Jaa. Whatever is the reason, Zumba burns tons of calories.
Bootcamp: Believe it or not but this is also a trend in India already. Bootcamps provide the much-needed kicks in the booty to lose weight, build strength, and tone up real quickly. The reason why they are so loved is that they actually utilize circuit and interval training, which are most important for weight loss. It’s like one minute you will be doing as many pushups as you can, and the next you’ll be sprinting. As a result, you don’t get bored plus it literally keeps you on your toes.
Aerojumps: Call it weird or the last thing on your mind but they have come on the fitness scene in a big way. What started with celebrities in Hollywood by a famous fitness trainer became a worldwide phenomenon. This includes rope jumping, workout songs to boost your mood and energy on the spot. Boxers are familiarized with the important of jump ropes in their training sessions.
So what do you think of all these trends? Aren’t they fresh and new? Some of us at ALW are going to try them out. You do too.

It’s half a year already. And a lot of us are probably doing the same old mistakes of the past year in fitness. AnyLinuxWork girls were just caught discussing the faux pas of fitness trends this year. We sneak-peaked and stole a few ideas that they were discussing. Well ofcourse these ideas are not original and picked up from several fitness blogs that they all keep reading. Yet, we definitely stumbled over, if not diamond , a gold mine.
So here’s a lowdown on what is out of the fitness scene and should be avoided.
1) I am fat, I am ugly: This is a thought you better get rid of now. Recent trends have shown that it is important to be fit, healthy and feel beautiful, however your figure is. A great self-image contributes a great deal in fitness and you are able to view yourself as someone who is a flower plant that needs a little bit of pruning. A lot of fit and good-looking men have often fallen for women much heavier in weight. Yet they make a great couple and complete each other.
2) Gym is a necessity: This idea is totally out of the block now. Joining a gym today is a trend not a necessity. Many celebrity fitness coaches would tell you that the basics are the best like swimming, running and walking. Gym is a great option but not an essential for sure.
3) Yoga is a must: Any physiotherapist today would tell you that not every Yoga move is made for you. A lot of Yoga is good for you but you don’t need all of it. Always consult a physiotherapist before you take up Asanas. Understand your body needs and then go for it.
4) Overdoing it: Women suffer from the temptation and its effects much more than men. A beauty expert was desperate to lose extra fat and over-did a few gym workouts. She ended up developing complications in her muscles and had to stop the gym regime for one whole month, that finally led to more fat. So relax, and take it easy.
It’s good to know about fitness trends but it is always better to take them with a pinch of salt. Having said that we also promise to keep you updated soon with some real good fitness trends too. And yes these are all picked up by the girls at ALW. Watch this space!

Couch potatoes are never healthy. This is the new age proverb for all those who lead a sedentary lifestyle. This is particularly true for the IT industry professionals. They simply cannot help it as their life is all about sitting around a computer. But can this also be an excuse to take health for a toss? Ofcourse not.
And so we at AnyLinuxWork, make our team aware of the health hazards of sedentary lifestyle. We make them do physical activities regularly so that they are not confined to their chairs. But this blog is all about the possible disadvantages of an inactive life. Why should one believe that inactivity is bad for one. Some major demerits of being a couch potato are:
Obesity: You cannot avoid it if you are not an exercise-savvy person. Since you do not work out, run or exercise, there is an imbalance between energy intake and energy consumed. In other words, the number of calories burnt is far less than those consumed leading to obesity. Obesity is the cause of many more dangerous diseases like heart attack, diabetes and many more.
Aging: Believe it or not but several research works have shown that those who lead a sedentary life, age real fast. The signs of ageing are more visible on their face. This is due to the damage of the telomeres, present at the end of the chromosomes. Telomeres play a role in preventing the aging process.
Heart problems: Sedentary lifestyle adversely affects circulation. If you are not physically active, the formation of blocks within arteries is promoted and this results in circulatory problems. The end result of this imbalance is heart related problems such as atherosclerosis.
Cancers: Physically inactive people around the world are more prone to getting several types of cancers like breast cancer, colon cancer, and other types of malignant tumors.
Weak muscles: Imagine what havoc sedentary life can inflict on your muscles. Since you don’t use your muscles, it reduces their strength, joint structure and functioning, thus predisposing the person to diseases such as arthritis and osteoporosis where bones become weak and fragile.
Work efficiency: It is ironic that the very work that is affecting your physical activity can be affected badly if you are inactive. The brain activity gets reduced making the person less reactive which in turn hinders the individual’s work progress. Lack of sufficient work progress makes the person depressed.
Your kids would suffer too: Since you don’t really mind having a sedentary lifestyle, you wouldn’t mind your kids sitting with video games, television or computer all day long. Like you, they would eventually develop problems of obesity and blood pressure.
It’s time to wake up and do some serious exercise just like Team AnyLinuxWork does. We also belong to the same lifestyle but we follow a strict physical activity routine. Right from our CEO Vivek Singhal who never misses his gym in the mornings or fitness conscious COO Nidhi Mongia who follows a daily exercise regime – everyone at ALW is fitness-savvy. You can be the same too.

Oh hell, I missed my swimming class again! And there goes the sigh and with it a growing frustration on the increasing tummy. But that is not how we, at AnyLinuxWork, begin our day. We never mind if we missed our swimming class. We forget it if we woke up late and could not exercise. There’s always another way to make up for the loss. And the another way begins right from the Green Tea with which we begin a typical work day at AnyLinuxWork.
Wait, that’s just one part of our healthy work –life-style. We give our team mates a chance to compensate for some extra calorie that they couldn’t burn back home. We follow some very simple steps of exercising right at our office so that we keep fit despite missing our usual exercise regime. Here’s how.
AnyLinuxWork Team is creative when it comes to exercising at work place. We channelize our naughty minds towards devising clever ways to finding time for some ‘office exercise’. Whenever our HR guy Ravi is not carrying loads of office paper bundles, he makes it a point to take the stairs and not the lift. Isn’t that simple? Some of us park our vehicles deliberately further away so that walking around the office premises is a way to reach the cabin.
You can also follow some of our tricks that we religiously follow every day at ALW premises so as to keep fit. For instance:
• Use mobile phone to set an alarm every hour that reminds you to stand up and go to the water tank. Have a glass full of water and come back. That way, you give your body a little physical activity every hour and prevent yourself from dehydration by having a glass full of water on an hourly basis. Water is great for skin too.
• Instead of asking office boys to deliver documents to colleagues, carry them yourselves.
• Instead of having the 4 pm tea inside your cabin, walk up to the pantry and have it. Roam about a bit while having it.
• When someone calls on your mobile phone, walk-the-talk. That is, talk while walking instead of sitting.
• Always leave your lunch box in your car or scooter. Then run for it as the lunch bell rings. That way, you would have also helped a bit of your appetite.
In addition to this, Team ALW has been doing stretching exercises for almost a year now. These exercises include stretching using a chair and office table. We do this stretching almost every hour for a few minutes. This habit keeps us alert and prevents sleep while working. This is the reason why most of the times our employees look energetic and active. AnyLinuxWork has also been conducting a lot of activities to make sure its employees are healthy and physically active. We organize trekking expeditions from time to time. We begin our day with Office Yoga. We counsel employees about healthy diet and implement the same in our canteen.
As part of its commitment towards physical fitness, AnyLinuxWork is soon launching a fitness portal by the name of MeriFitness which is going to be a one-of-a-kind website for fitness enthusiasts. The portal is being launched in an international business technology event CeBIT Australia 2011 in May this year.

As we were discussing about fitness at the ALW premises casually over coffee, we came to know some seriously funny myths women have about fitness and particularly weight trainings. Since ALW is a pro-fitness team, it was important that our women overcame a few mental hurdles while following their regular fitness regime.
A lot of women in India think that if they go for dumbbell presses or stiff-legged deadlifts etc, their body would become stiff. This is a false conception. On the contrary, these exercises increase flexibility. If you perform these exercises appropriately, your stretching capabilities increase.
Quite a few of our female team mates were scared of muscle training or weight lifting because they thought these exercises would make them masculine. This is probably the stupidest and the biggest myth of fitness training regime. The reason why most Indian women think so is because of a few athletic trainers who usually take a lot of pills to achieve that masculine body. A trainee can opt out of these pills and can continue doing the basic push-ups and lighter exercises to burn fat and keep the body fit.
The list of myths, as it turned out, seemed endless. That also helped us see the commonest myth of all the women here in India. They think if they stop weight training for a few weeks or for a certain time, the muscle would turn into fat. This is not even scientific. Most weight trainers or health experts would help you understand that muscle and fat are two different tissues altogether. They cannot be compared and one cannot replace the other. The only possible connection is when someone stops the training as well as the recommended diet together. The result is that lack of training leads to muscle inactivity and thus loss of muscle while carelessness with the diet leads to fat production. Get it?
Yet I am really glad for one thing that ALW team is still quite realistic about the effects of exercises. They don’t believe in the myth that if they exercise daily, they can eat anything that they want. A lot of women in India are crazy after flat abs and can go to any extent of owning them. Yet most of the times they think that since they are exercising to check their abs’ fitness, they can still eat cookies or heavy calorie meals. How wrong! Lets understand this better. Fat is the extra energy that you failed to consume in your body. While that extra fat needs to be burnt, you still cannot afford to add more in your body. It is often difficult to determine exactly how much your body metabolism allows the consumption and intake of energy, hence difficult to control if your exercise is really making up for the unused energy.
In that case, women may ask, so why exercise? Well that’s simply because despite your body’s inherent capacity to fuel basal metabolism, it still can take more than it can consume resulting in fat. And so you still need to exercise and burn fat.
So women, stop offering excuses and get to work and keep fit. Also don’t believe every word on fitness that you hear from here and there. Not even us. Go ahead, cross check it and then believe us. Happy exercising!
